The Venue

Well, thanks to Rebecca’s suggestion I went and had a look at Cape, situated at the top of Victoria Street and Carlton Street and it looks like a winner.

The upstairs bar is provisionally booked and waiting for us.

I say provisionally because, as Steve the manager pointed out, the upstairs is only accessible via stairs.

So if this presents anyone with an accessibility problem, please let me know and I’ll find an alternative. Email me at adam dot bird at esendex dot com is probably best. I need to know by close of business Monday, so please get in touch.

A vision for NottTuesday.com

When I first conceived of Nott Tuesday, I wanted it to be more than just a monthly meeting. While that in itself is important and needed, I believe there is a greater opportunity.

“But before I tell you that story, I need to tell you this story.”

Last year, several friends (and people who have become friends) cycled from Beeston to Paris to raise funds for our children’s school. The exercise was a huge success.

Not only did we make it to Paris and raised enough money for a new minibus with plenty left over, we also engaged the school community through an active web presence www.r4rh.org and blog rideforroundhill.wordpress.com. The ride itself almost became incidental.

The key element of the team of riders and support coming together was the blog. We took the decision early on to enable all riders and the support team to post and comment.

This one decision, meant instead of the blog being the broadcast medium for the organising committee, it became the hub for ideas, desires, fun and seriousness. All members of the team were able to dip in and out as they were able and engage to the level that suited them.

After the ride, in May 2008, we just kept on using it, we couldn’t help ourselves. Weekend rides were posted, information and advice shared, amusing videos linked to. We kept on cycling together with the website at the centre of our new group.

Thanks to the wonder of Google, other cyclists started finding the blog and would leave comments, arranging to join us on the next ride. Very soon they would become members of our growing cycling community.

Fast-forward a few months and we’ve formed Beeston Cycling Club centred around a new website with the blog at it’s heart.

Time and time again, the cyclists who join us have done so because they saw us as a living, breathing club. They’d looked at other club web sites that were stale, out-of-date and weren’t encouraged to get involved.

So, to NottTuesday.com.

I would like to open up NottTuesday.com to all of you.

I would like you to share your thoughts, ideas, success stories, aspirations, advice, vacancies, posts on personal blogs, other blog posts you recommend, etc with the rest of the group.

The more we share and interact, the more we demonstrate to the wider community that we are alive and active, the more members we will attract.

The more members we attract the more opportunities we have for finding the partnership opportunities and advice that can make us all more successful.

The more we can demonstrate to the outside world what a vibrant and active community we are, the more our collective voice can be used to get the stories of each of you heard.

Unlike the cycling group, many/most of you will have something to sell. The danger is that this turns into a market place with people indiscriminately hawking their wares.

While this initiative is about making us all more successful, I believe turning this site into a advertising forum will devalue it and kill the potential before we’ve even started.

We’re going to have to feel our way through this but I firmly believe the rewards from making NottTuesday.com an active hub for our community will make the journey worthwhile.

Let’s interact, share and help our way to being part of the most rewarding business community on the planet.

What do you think?

Venue Options

Last week was the most exciting yet in the adventure that is setting up Nott Tuesday. The really great bit is the number of you that are coming.

So my thoughts have turned to the venue and I’d like your help. Can any of you recommend anywhere.

My original plan was upstairs at the Slug and Lettuce but I walked past it the other day and it appears to have shut down.

So I’m looking for somewhere in central Nottingham, of that sort of size, that is/can be quiet enough for someone to speak so the rest of us can hear and has a reasonably priced bar.

Welcome your thoughts, I’ll book it this week.

International tech blogger to speak at Nott Tuesday

Today the Nott Tuesday team is excited to announce the identity of the speaker for the inaugural Nott Tuesday networking event on the 10th February 2009.

Ewan MacLeod, influential tech blogger and editor in chief at Mobile Industry Review, http://www.mobileindustryreview.com, will be talking to the attendees on the topic “How to get your message heard”.

Ewan said “My work on MIR, [Mobile Industry Review] means I spend my time working closely with tech companies, PR, journalists and investors.

“It can be very noisy so getting your message heard is difficult.

“I’m really excited to have this opportunity to share some of what I’ve learned over the years.

“Too much of what I write about and hear is London centric, the balance definitely needs redressing.”

Adam Bird, Nott Tuesday founder, said: “Ewan is a highly respected figure in the technology industry as well as being a first rate speaker. I’m very excited that he’s agreed to speak at our first event.

“He has the power to hold a room like few others and is never afraid of saying it how it is.”

The first Nott Tuesday event will be held in central Nottingham on Tuesday 10th February 2009.

BBC Radio Nottingham here we come

BBC Radio Nottingham picked up on our launch press release and have invited me on to their morning show on Monday.

Firstly a huge thank you is in order to my good friend Martin Stott and his team at Bulletin PR. They took my rather amateurish attempt at a press release, applied some magic and turned it into something desirable.

Secondly a big thank you for BBC Radio Nottingham for giving me the opportunity to get the message out. Great to have local radio supporting local initiatives.

The slot is a regular feature where I’ve had to chose some tracks to talk about as well as giving me an opportunity to promote the event. So if you know anyone who’s undecided about coming get them tuned in between 11:30 and 12:00 and I’ll see if I can convince them.

LinkedIn group up and running as well

We now have a LinkedIn group: Nott Tuesday. So please join and we can connect and keep each other up to date through that.

Tuesday 10th February

The inaugural Nott Tuesday event will be on Tuesday 10th February at 18:30.

Venue will be confirmed nearer the time but this will be in central Nottingham and serving a selection of suitable beverages.

Sponsors, speakers, etc all being considered and researched. Will let you know what I manage to organise. The more of you that come the easier these will be.
