Second speaking slot booked for 10th March event

In a change to the previous event format I thought we’d have 2 speaking slots. One from an external notable, in this case Doug Ashby, followed by a shorter slot from someone in the group.

I’d like to give people in group the opportunity to share some ideas, experiences, or rally the group on subjects of common interest. Blatant sales pitches are out, this is about helping each other.

Our first such speaker is Ian Lockwood in his capacity as founder of working with Accelerate Nottingham. He will be talking to us about the work they are doing bringing commercial fibre connectivity to Nottingham and how we can all get involved in making it happen.

I’d also like to make this a call for future speakers at future events. I’m imagining a 10 min slot after the main speaker. I’d like to keep it brief and informal, not imagining PowerPoint for example (though if really want it I’ll see what I can organise), that way the speakers can be finished by seven thirty and the business of networking can continue.

So, if you have something that you’d like to share with the group then please let me know and I’ll book you in (adam dot bird at esendex dot com).

Doug Ashby to speak at March Event

Big thanks to Nick Barker for putting me in touch with Doug Ashby who has agreed to be the main speaker at the March Nott Tuesday event.

His topic: ‘Retirement at 45, Heaven or Hell?’

Doug is an award winning entrepreneur who founded, built and finally sold his company, Computer Parts International in 2006.

He will be sharing the highs and lows of his journey and ultimately answer the question ‘Retirement at 45, Heaven or Hell?’

‘My’ Mailing List

I’ve been approached by a couple of people now for access to my Nott Tuesday mailing list. I thought it was worth setting the record straight on this.

Nott Tuesday is my attempt at establishing a community of people working in IT in Nottingham. It is not a formal networking business that someone can become a signed up member of.

The contact details and connections I make through this initiative are my personal contacts and connections as they are for all of you.

Please do not think that by engaging with me that you will end up on a distribution list that I will hawk around to people wanting to access you all.

However, if you have events, schemes, and/or initiatives that you would like to share with the group there is still an opportunity to do so.

The Nott Tuesday website is available for you all to use. The web site will evolve over the coming months and part of what I would like to see is sharing of information among members.

The post by George Rice of the University of Nottingham about the Knowledge Transfer Voucher Scheme is a great example.

If you’ve written an article that you’d like to publish on a subject dear to your heart then that’s welcome too. Also welcome is a summary and a link back to an article on your personal blog.

I am going to reserve the right to exercise editorial control, I don’t want this to descend into a thinly veiled hawking of wares. I’m sure you feel the same.

So, if you’d like to share something with or ask something of the rest of the community, please drop me an email for a login to the site.

Tuesday March 10th 18:30 – 20:30

The next event will be held at Cape Bar, Nottingham again on Tuesday 10th March, starting at 18:30.

I plan to have a slight change to the format this time thanks to a suggestion from Nick Barker. I’m going to try and organise 2 speakers one external and one from the group.

If you can recommend or introduce me to anyone you think we should have speaking to us please let me know.

Also, if you have something you’d like to share with the rest of the group then again drop me an email or dm.

Please leave any comments on any other ways we could improve the events.

February Event Report

It was with trepidation that I arrived at Cape Bar last night at about quarter past 6. A large empty room confronted me and set my heart racing as to whether I might have over-egged the venue somewhat.

A quick scan of twitter for #notttuesday and I could see a few people were heading over, and with the guys from Esendex coming, at least I wasn’t going to be on my own.

I shouldn’t have worried.

You kept coming and coming. There must have been 50-60 of you and the place was buzzing by the time the talks were about to start.

There was even a Nottingham Evening Post photographer which got me excited until I discovered he was there with Martin pretending we were at Nottingham Twestival.

Ewan MacLeod gave us all an excellent, brief history of Mobile Industry Review and how he learnt to beat the media and publishing industry at their own game. Opinion and ‘little’ bit of controversy gave his audience something to keep on coming back for.

img_3676It was then onto the networking and there was no stopping some of you. Next time I looked at my phone it as quarter to ten.

I ended up having snatched conversations with so many of you that need to be longer.

Thanks to Alan O’Dea, I now know that Stoney Street is a hot bed of international online technology companies.

Leslie Bowie and I have a ‘discussion’ to continue about the evils or not of Google

Peter Goodwin tells me there is a plan to bring serious broadband capacity to the Lace Market, hopefully more on that from Peter later.

Patrick Smith was sharing the pain of having to go to Barcelona next week for Mobile World Congress.

Plaudits for Tina Bilan making it despite a very, newly injured wrist. Networking above and beyond the call of duty.

Thanks to Caron-Jane Lyon for Qiking the event and Jonathan Relf for his photo journalism skills.

Nick Barker and Simon Oxley shared the joys of being a startup and the exciting new service coming out of Viisys.

It was great to meet Joanna Butler in the flesh, her SEO tips via twitter are a goldmine.

Last man standing I think goes to Al Carlton who I’m sure I saw at the bar downstairs as I left.

And there were more of you, many more, I look forward to finding out more on this site or at the next event. Do add comments with your own experiences of the night.

Thanks for coming, see you on March 10th.

You know, I’m starting to suspect that this thing might just have some legs.

Oh What A Night

Thanks to all of you who came, it was a fantastic turnout.

I really hope you all found it rewarding and enjoyable.

Full report to come.

It’s Tomorrow!

The venue is waiting for us, the LinkedIn and Facebook groups are overflowing (loads more of you have joined than I anticipated) and many other people have said they’ll come.

The Nott Tuesday adventure is reaching it’s first milestone and I’m very excited. I’m really looking forward to meeting you all.

Don’t forget your business cards and let’s help each other to make 2009 a real success and put Nottingham on the IT map.
