Nott Tuesday April – Phil Campbell announced as speaker

Much excitement here at Nott Tuesday HQ. Phil Campbell, social media maven, has just confirmed as the main speaker for Nott Tuesday April. His topic:

“it’s all about the information, marty! – join the conversation”

A bit about Phil in his own words:

me.dm (pronounced medium) is my personal home on the interweb. Freelance webdeveloper, creative, videoblogger, mashup guy based in derbyshire, England. I love managing a team of freelancers from around the globe. Standalone i am available for social media projects, creative ideas and consultancy.

I currently work full time for an interactive games company in Market Harborough called sleepydog.net (@sleepydog on twitter) – a very early adopter i have been using the internet since 1998 when i started on a network called fidonet and progressed onto using enterprise and then demon.   I have seen the landscape change many times. ;)

My skills have been fine tuned over the years at media (old and new) and are known to be a compulsive social networker. we web develop using php/mysql/zend/mvc (via my team) video productions in standard def and HD, web api mashups utilizing existing frameworks and putting together social media plans for companies and brands.

I’m currently working on a whole raft of projects and you can find out about then at my blog – http://me.dm/blog

I’m just finalising the details of the second speaker, will post shortly.

See you on Tuesday the 14th

NextGen Roadshow is coming to Nottingham

Thanks Adam for offering us a post on your Nott Tuesday blog. Connected Nottingham together with the Community Broadband Network (CBN) is hosting a roadshow on Next Generation Access (NGA), often referred to as superfast broadband. The roadshow will explain NGA and help local authorities, businesses and economic development organisations present the business case for public sector and RDA leadership and involvement.

The roadshow is taking place on the 24th March, 9.30am- 4.15pm at The Albert Hall Conference Centre in Nottingham.

The day will explore Nottingham’s latest fibre developments and discuss Nottingham’s public services shared network development. During the day you will also hear what the government’s take is on NGA as outlined in their interim Digital Britain report, why it is seemingly such a slow development in the UK compared to other countries and what you can do to help speed up this process and benefit from it.

If you would like to find out more please visit the CBN website where you can view the day’s agenda and register online.

Registration fee for this event is £50.00.

We hope to see you there.

Thanks,

Hannah.

All about you

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m keen for you all to use this site to share and I’m pleased a few of you (Ian, Martin, George) have taken up the mantle with specific events or projects.

I think though, it’s about time we told the world who we are and what we do. I’d like to invite you all to write a profile of you and your business.

Something brief, ideally with a flattering picture of yourself, with links to your company site, LinkedIn profile, twitter stream, in fact anything relevant.

Drop me an email adam.bird@esendex.com to get a login. If you already have a WordPress.com login all the better, just let me know the email address you use and I can set you up as an author in one easy step.

Please use the Profile category when you create your profiles so I can present them as a separate, easy to review stream.

As usual let me have an feedback.

March Event Report

IMG_0730.JPG

March 10th was the day of the tricky second album. Yes, the debut had been well received but was Nott Tuesday destined for one-hit-wonder status?

Turns out my fears were unfounded. Another 50+ turnout, another evening of fine speakers and another evening of lots of people networking. Perfect.

There was a great mix of, now, familiar faces and new people that had heard about the event through various means.

First speaker up was Doug Ashby who gave us a very candid account of his rise from engineer with an idea to him redefining the business model of an entire industry. The good, and bad, decisions along the way and whether it had all been worth it.

Personally I was especially interested to hear how he had found success through a series of ‘light bulb’ moments rather than the one killer idea.

There is an assumption that being an entrepreneur is about have one idea and seeing that through. Those of those who do this actually it’s about constantly re-evaluating what you’re doing and whether you can do it better.

The business you start with isn’t generally the business you end with.

Ian Lockwood was up next talking about nottinghamfibre.co.uk, his plan to bring 100Mbp broadband to the Lace Market for £100 per month.

His presentation certainly seemed to strike a chord with the assembled, he’ll be posting shortly with more details of how you can make it happen.

Then it was on to networking.

Apart from catching up with lots of ‘regulars’ from last time, I was also able to meet loads of new people discovering even more tech talent in Nottingham.

So another great event, it’s starting to become a habit. See you in April (Tuesday 14th)

Tuesday April 14th

Again, we’re at the Cape Bar Bluu, 5 Broadway, NG1 1PR in Nottingham from 18:30.

Our speaker will be Phil Campbell with “it’s all about the information, marty! – join the conversation”

Working on a different approach for the May 12th event, will keep you posted.

Nottingham Fibre Broadband: Tell us what you want!

Nottingham Fibre

Adam has kindly given me access to make this post about Nottingham Fibre, as announced at last night’s Nott Tuesday.

Those who attended will know what we’re trying to achieve: fibre broadband for Nottingham, starting with the Lace Market. That could mean 100Mbps symmetrical internet connections for your business – 200 times faster for uploading than a normal ADSL connection that most people have!

The technology isn’t really the issue, it’s the demand for the service. So what we need to know is who wants it, where you are and if you want to tell us, why you want it. If you can tell us what you pay now, that will help us set a realistic price too – we think we can match what most businesses pay now for broadband, with a target price of £100 per month for a 100Mbps connection. It could even be better than that – the more people who want it, the lower the price becomes.

This is a local business, trying to mould its service to the needs of the users, not a giant telco imposing their will on hapless customers. We need your support to make it happen, possibly as soon as six months’ time, providing your business (and Nottingham as a whole) with a real competitive advantage.

Please let us know if you’re interested here: www.nottinghamfibre.co.uk

We’re keen to hear from everyone, even if you’re not in the Lace Market area, so that we can plan ahead.
