Tuesday 9th Feb – Who’s data is it anyway?

I intimated that we’d have a strong follow up to Christian Payne‘s Social Media Freak Show and I’m pleased to announce we’ve delivered.

Professor of Digital Economy, Derek McAuley from The University of Nottingham will be speaking on the subject ‘Who’s data is it anyway’.

We are used to the idea of our “Digital Footprint” – those traces of our online activity that leave a record – some are concerned this has gone too far.

However, we are in a transition to a society in which ubiquitous computing makes recording of peoples physical activities, as well as their virtual ones, possible. How are we going to remain human in this society….

The talk will look as some of the technologies, how they might be used (for good and evil) and discuss approaches to creating businesses that can exploit them without trampling the citizen’s privacy under a corporate or government boot.

I reckon the panel session will take care of itself after that warm up.

So, to summarise:

18:30 – 20:30 at Bluu, Nottingham

Speaker: Derek McAuley – Who’s data is it anyway

Panel: topics raised

See you there.

It’s almost our birthday

Just 12 short months ago we had the first Nott Tuesday. My haven’t we grown. I’m hoping we can make our first birthday a bit special.

Christian Payne set the bar very high for speaker quality when he regaled us with is Social Media Freak Show in January.

The speaker for February is confirmed just the title is to be decided. I’ll post here shortly with full details.

Just a bit of a heads up, our cloud computing discussion panel touched on the subject of privacy. I expect privacy to feature heavily, certainly in the post-speaker panel.

So if you have concerns, opinions or are otherwise interested in what we are doing with our data these days this will be a session you won’t want to miss.

The date for your diary is Tuesday 9th February at Bluu in Nottingham from 18:30

As it’s our birthday, I’m keen to hear from any companies or organisations who would like to sponsor food or drinks at this event and benefit from being associated with this vibrant forum.

I might even bake a cake.

Tuesday 12th January 2010 – Social Media Freak Show

I’m really pleased to announce that Christian Payne (aka Documentally) will be bringing his Social Media Freak Show to Nott Tuesday on the 12th.

Following on from last month’s Social panel I thought it would be great to get something a little more practical for those that were inspired to create more.

Christian is a freelance mobile media maker who also specialises in Social Media & photography.

He’ll be talking about what tools an early adopting mobile media maker is using at the moment. All about the tools and platforms along with, and probably most importantly, basic how-tos.

As for the panel discussion, how about?:

2010 is going to be a great/terrible year to be in a tech business because…
